Sanjaya
Dhritarashtra’s adviser whose remote vision narrates the battlefield — and thereby the Gita.
Overview
Sanjaya is the trusted adviser of the blind king Dhritarashtra. He has been granted what Swami jokingly compares to “telescopic vision” or “TV vision” — the ability to see events on the distant battlefield and report them live. In Swami’s phrase, Sanjaya is “like CNN breaking news” sitting beside the old king.
Sanjaya’s narration is the Gita’s narrative frame. Everything Krishna and Arjuna say on the battlefield reaches Dhritarashtra — and us — through him. The dialogue shifts between the battlefield and the royal court throughout.
