Duryodhana

The eldest Kaurava, who admits knowing right from wrong but refuses to change.

Overview

Duryodhana is the eldest of the hundred Kaurava cousins and the war’s principal antagonist. He seizes the kingdom that rightfully belongs to the Pandavas and inflicts years of suffering on them, leading to the Mahabharata war.

The peace episode. Before the war, Krishna comes to Duryodhana as an emissary of peace and tells him he is on the path of adharma. Duryodhana’s reply is the eternal human condition: “I know what is dharma, I don’t feel like doing it. I know what is adharma, I cannot stop myself from doing it.” He admits wrongdoing with clear self-knowledge — and has no wish to change.

Swami’s key contrast: Arjuna, later in the Gita, says the same thing — why do people do wrong even when they don’t want to? — but asks how to change. That single difference separates the person who receives the teaching from the person who cannot.
