Saguna Brahman

Brahman seen through maya — Brahman “with attributes,” the creator-God of religion and the object of devotion.

Overview

Vedanta distinguishes two ways of speaking about the absolute: nirguna Brahman, Brahman without attributes — the pure sat-chit-ananda of 02-16; and saguna Brahman, Brahman with attributes — the same reality seen as creator, sustainer, and destroyer of the universe, the personal God of worship, the Ishvara of the scriptures.

Saguna Brahman is not a different being from nirguna Brahman. It is nirguna Brahman viewed through the lens of maya, stepping down one step to relate to the many. Swami Sarvapriyananda introduces the term briefly at the end of Ep 5 when someone asks about the creation story (Genesis, Adam and Eve) — the creator is saguna Brahman; the absolute is nirguna. Through the power of maya, saguna Brahman does not create the universe as a separate thing but projects it.

This distinction is what lets Advaita hold together rigorous non-dualism and the full devotional tradition. Bhakti is addressed to saguna Brahman; jnana culminates in recognition of nirguna Brahman. Both are Brahman.

  • brahman — the underlying reality
  • nirguna-brahman(not yet created — the complementary aspect)
  • maya — the power by which saguna appears
  • avatara — saguna Brahman taking human form
  • bhakti-yoga — the path addressed to saguna Brahman

In the Gita

  • 02-16 — the ground from which saguna appears

Lecture evidence

  • Ep. 5 [65:48]: Asked about creation, Swami distinguishes nirguna Brahman (pure reality) from saguna Brahman (the creator aspect); through maya, saguna Brahman projects, rather than creating, the universe.
