Also: doer, agent, agent of action
Karta
The doer — the agent of action. In Vedanta, a function of the jiva and the body-mind, not of the atman.
Overview
The verse 2.19 denies karta-ness to atman: nāyaṁ hanti na hanyate — “it slays not, nor is it slain.” Pure consciousness does not act; action is a property of the body-mind complex. But when atman is identified with the body-mind through ignorance — when you say “I walked”, “I hit”, “I wrote” — karta-hood is attributed to the self. That attribution is the beginning of the karma problem.
The full Vedantic chain: atman is eternal and actionless. When you mistake yourself for the body-mind, you inherit the body-mind’s agency; you become a karta. As karta, every action you perform generates a result that you, as bhokta, will experience. The jiva trapped in samsara is the atman identifying as karta-and-bhokta, caught in the endless loop of doing-and-experiencing.
Liberation is not the cessation of action — karma-yoga specifically teaches continued action without karta-hood. It is the recognition that atman was never the karta. Then all action happens through the body-mind, but the consciousness lighting it up is not itself implicated.
Sri Ramakrishna’s ami yantra, tumi yantri — “I am the machine, you are the operator” — is a devotional version of the same move: God is the karta, the jiva is the instrument.

Lecture evidence
- Ep. 7 [27:02]: Atman is not karta, agent of action. When identified with body-mind, one appears to be the doer.
- Ep. 7 [28:21]: Karta-hood arises from confusion — atman lighting up the body-mind as if from within, becomes “the doer” through that identification.
- Ep. 7 [29:07]: Ramakrishna’s “I am the machine, you are the operator” — the devotional route to non-karta-hood.
